Los Angeles is known as the City of Dreams, and for one Australian dancer and YouTube star it’s a dream fulfilled.
Jasmine Meakin, who runs Brisbane dance studio Mega Jam with her husband Luis Pinto, was invited to join a team of top dancers in a video for Empire of the Sun’s Celebrate (Tommy Trash Remix).
Filmed in LA, the video is part of a new campaign by
“I was over there with some of the most incredible dancers in the industry. I was pinching myself! I couldn’t believe they’d asked me to be part of it,” Jasmine said.
The dance-focused campaign aims to reduce HIV by 2015. People are invited to film their favourite dance moves and share it on YouTube or Instagram using the hashtag #CokeREDmoves.
For the first 1,000 videos uploaded, Coke will add another $25,000 to the $1 million it has already donated to financing HIV/AIDS programs in Africa.
After filming the video, Jasmine and the other (RED) dancers, including Harry Shum, Jr. from Glee, and dance crew Jabbawockeez, went home to make their own solo videos.
Jasmine’s husband Luis directed and produced their video, which was filmed with Jasmine’s Mega Jam dance crew on the top of a hotel overlooking Brisbane River.
All the videos can be found at The DanceOn Network, a top dance channel on YouTube with over 7 million subscribers.
Jasmine shot to fame 12 months ago when her dance tutorial videos started getting noticed in a big way on YouTube. Her Mega Jam channel has now passed 500,000 subscribers and has more than 200 million video views.
“The whole YouTube thing has been the best, biggest thing for me, because it has opened up what I do to the whole world,” she said.
“People were videoing my classes and sticking them up on YouTube,” she said. “They were tragic, shot from the back corner. So a friend of mine said to me, why don’t you video your class, and you put it up.
“Overnight it just boomed, and all of a sudden I had this incredible YouTube channel. It’s only been in the last year or so since we joined Dance On that we’ve really been able to harness some of these amazing things.”
One of those amazing things is the opportunity to be a part of
“I’m really proud to be part of something like this. It’s such a worthy cause too,” Jasmine said.
