Brand new Happiness Cycle bikes donated to Morwell community

VICTORIA: 6 November 2015: Hundreds of teens from Morwell Victoria are invited to take part in The Happiness Cycle, an initiative by Coca-Cola and Bicycle Network that aims to get teens across Australia more active.

Riding into Morwell, Victoria on 20th and 21st November 2015, The Happiness Cycle will be holding two events, inviting pre-registered schools to attend on Friday and opening the event to all teenagers aged 13-17 in the wider community on Saturday. 

Since 2013, the community-based cycling program has donated over 7500 bikes in more than 30 communities, encouraging Australian teens to be more active by riding bikes. Research suggests 63% of people aged 10-19 are physically active less than once a week1, a statistic that enhances the importance of programs such as The Happiness Cycle.

Teens attending The Happiness Cycle event will be given the ultimate cycling day out and learn everything from bike mechanics and maintenance to core riding skills such as road safety, balance, awareness and endurance all on a specially built obstacle track.

Bicycle Network CEO Craig Richards, says, "We’re really excited to be visiting Victoria for The Happiness Cycle again after highly successful events in the program   so   far.   Riding a   bike   gives   teens   an   opportunity    to    enjoy  their independence as well as increasing their physical wellbeing”.

Supporting The Happiness Cycle for the second year in a row is BMX World Champion, London 2012 Olympic Silver medallist, Rio hopeful and The Happiness Cycle ambassador, Sam Willoughby, who is encouraging teens to get in and give cycling a go.

Willoughby says, “Cycling is a great way for teens to spend their spare time having fun with mates. Riding a bike has given me some amazing opportunities and is a sport I have enjoyed since I was a kid. I’ve seen the positive impact The Happiness Cycle has on teens, and look forward to seeing more happy faces having fun and being active throughout this program.”

In July 2013, Coca-Cola made four business commitments to help to address the issue of obesity in Australia.
