With the end of January, the summer break is well and truly over. What better time to get out of your comfy pants and into some activities? Swapping the cafe crawl for a social stroll, or the dinner party for dancing, doesn't have to be a bad thing. Your body will thank you all year long. 

Here are some great ideas to get started.

Roll

Get yourself a pair of inline skates, and find a smooth route to try them out with friends. Inline skating is about as retro as you can get, as it first emerged in the 1980s as an off-season training workout for ice hockey players, and once you’ve got the safety gear rolling is fun and free.  

Dive

Swim, splash, or just swan around, the beach is the perfect place to cool off after a long hot summer day. Split into teams for a game of cricket, soccer or volleyball on the sand, or if you’re feeling more adventurous try something new like surfing or stand up paddle boarding.

Whack

While badminton has been an Olympic sport since 1992, it’s also perfect for the beach or garden. All you need is a net, a couple of rackets and a shuttlecock. Badminton is a great way to sharpen your reflexes; according to Wikipedia a shuttlecock’s maximum velocity is 332 kilometres per hour.

Dance. 

Salsa is a fitness craze that's taking Australia by storm. Like the sauce, salsa is a spicy mix of Latin and Afro-Caribbean influences. It’s a high energy workout that offers the extra challenge of finding your rhythm and mastering tricky dance steps at the same time. Why not take a friend along to your local salsa club, or try your luck with Rueda, a Cuban salsa where you move from one partner to the next.

Spin. 

It’s the best way to get from A to B for anyone who needs to add exercise to their day. Make cycling your transport method for short trips, like to meet friends at the beach or the local pool this summer. If you’re more the thrill-seeking type, spend a day downhill mountain-biking or launching over jumps at the nearest BMX track.
